What is actually driving the kiwi.
Two different moves wearing the same clothes
NZD has been strong. That is not in dispute. What matters is why, because the answer determines whether the move is tradeable against the CAD, the AUD, or only against the dollar.
The USD leg
A large part of the recent kiwi strength is not kiwi strength at all. It is dollar weakness. If NZD/USD is rising while NZD/CAD and NZD/AUD sit flat, the currency has not been repriced — the denominator has.
That version of the move is not a New Zealand story and should not be traded as one.
The RBNZ leg
The other possibility is a genuine repricing of the RBNZ path. That shows up in the crosses, not just against the dollar, and it persists across sessions rather than resetting overnight.
How to tell them apart
Look at the crosses first, the dollar pair last. If the strength survives in NZD/CAD and NZD/AUD, there is a domestic case and it can be positioned into the next rate decision. If it does not, the only honest expression is against the USD, and the trade is really a dollar trade.
Right now the crosses are carrying part of the move. That makes it a real, if partial, RBNZ story.
