The RBNZ hiked to 2.75% — and deleted the line promising more.

The call

The OCR was raised 25bp to 2.75%, as expected. Second hike in a row. On its own, nothing — the move was fully priced. What changed was the statement. The Bank removed its promise of further increases and cut its own forecast for where the rate goes.

The rate is 2.75%. October went from live to about 30%. Next decision 28 October.

Fewer hikes than the market was paying for means the kiwi is worth less to hold. Weak into 28 October.

The print

OCR 2.75%, against 2.75% expected and 2.50% previously. Agreed by consensus.

Zero surprise. The number was never the event.

Why it matters

When a decision is fully priced, the decision is not tradeable — the statement is. And the statement changed.

In July the Bank said further increases "appear likely at upcoming meetings." That sentence is gone. In its place: "the future OCR path is not pre-determined." The projected track was cut too — an average 2.81% for the fourth quarter, down from 2.84% in May — and the neutral rate estimate was lowered to 3.7% on softer oil.

The committee is split on why. Four of six see upside inflation risk. The other two point at downside activity risk and a recovery they call uneven.

So the Bank raised the rate and lowered its own forecast for the rate. Two-year swaps fell 8 basis points and October repriced to roughly 30%.

The intraday shape matters here. The decision landed 09:00 ICT, the press conference at 10:00. The 09:00 candle was noise — a priced number delivered. The information arrived an hour later, and the real repricing showed up in the Asia handover into the London open at 14:00 ICT. Nothing about the 09:00 print was tradeable.

The case

Headline inflation is 4.1%. Strip vehicle fuels and it is 2.9%. The Bank expects inflation back inside the band by mid-2027 and now holds in October, hiking once more in December if at all.

The kiwi was bid on a hiking RBNZ. It now holds a bank that has stopped promising.

Ideas

Long AUD/NZD — the structure, but not yet. The kiwi has no decision until 28 October, which makes it the quiet leg to pair against something live. Australia is the natural other side, but the RBA is 29 September — 23 days out, past the one-week positioning window. Range work on session boundaries until roughly 22 September, then position into it. Anything else needs its own leg checked. A short kiwi expressed against a currency with a live meeting this week is a trade about that meeting, not about this statement.

What would prove this wrong

New Zealand's Q3 CPI, due before 28 October, printing above the Bank's own 3.3% forecast. That puts October back on the table and the position comes off.
